In 2019, Patricia Funegra, deeply involved in Central America’s entrepreneurial landscape, identified significant obstacles hampering the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. These challenges, notably resource scarcity and funding gaps, were particularly acute in Northern Central American regions comprising Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Patricia discerned the unmet needs of the “missing middle” segment – enterprises too large for microfinance yet falling short of venture capital or commercial financing standards.
To address this gap, in 2023, Funegra founded the Moon Dancer Fund, an innovative model focused on investing catalytic impact-first capital in the region.
The Fund aims to catalyze economic development, promote employment, and foster innovation within Central American communities. We believe the “missing middle” concept represents a distinctive opportunity for transformative change and financial advancement in the dynamic entrepreneurial landscape of Northern Central American countries as well as in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
The Moon Dancer Fund’s value proposition works through a strategic collaboration with Global Development Advisors (“GDA”), a nonprofit organization that serves the Northern Central American countries.
Through this collaboration, GDA endeavors to equip startups and businesses with comprehensive investment readiness tools.
These tools include customized investment readiness programs, personalized technical assistance, and financial support to cover the associated costs.
Centered on our Impact Action Plan, our investment philosophy is guided by five core SDG values, focusing on sectors where growth capital is scarce but potential impact is high, and aligning our framework to foster economic growth, quality jobs, gender equality, and climate-smart investments.
